Design and process #2

Design and process #2

And we’re back! If you haven’t read Part 1 of our Deep Dive, scroll down and check out that entry first so you don’t miss anything. We left off on our last entry with research and design inspiration. In this entry, I’ll get more into the nitty gritty of things and the fun hands on part of designing.

Armed with my inspirations, I took to my drawing pad. After sketching several versions, I picked one that felt right and used this to fabricate my first prototypes which I cut out by hand from sheet metal. There’s a lot of trial and error involved when making things by hand so it took a few tries of making samples to arrive at the perfect shape that ended up becoming the final piece. The image below was one of a few versions I created.

After refining the final model, I molded the piece in silicone which can then be used to cast more pieces. Watch my video below to see how I make a batch of these hoops from start to finish!
I ended up loving this piece so much I decided to create a mini version and a necklace as well. Which one is your favorite?
